Productivity-focused and results-oriented, "Introduction to XSI Render Tree",
provides enjoyable, hands-on projects developed to maximize your understanding
of XSI’s Render Tree and give you ultimate control in the appearance of your
objects - a perfect compliment to "Fundamentals of mental ray". Popular topics
from "Introduction to XSI Render Tree" include: navigating the Render Tree,
bumpmap generators, working with displacement maps, using texture projections,
using mix nodes to combine textures, advanced texture placement, using light
shaders for volumetric effects, layering textures added control, working with
the ambient occlusion shader, using the Material Editor and numerous additional
lessons allowing you to work smarter, faster, and with more creativity in XSI.
Introduction
This lesson will introduce you to the topics that will be covered over
the span of this training kit.
Navigating the Render Tree
In this lesson we will look at the various ways of accessing and
navigating through the Render Tree in XSI.
Node
Connections
In this lesson we will look at the process of adding new nodes into the
Render Tree and how to create connections between nodes.
Surface Shaders (part 1)
XSI has several different surface shaders that control an object’s
color, opacity, reflectivity and many other attributes. We will discuss
most of the parameters common to all surface shader types.
Surface Shaders (part 2)
Now that we have looked at the parameters shared by all surface shaders,
lets look at what makes each surface shader unique, as well as the
common uses for each surface shader type.
Texture Supports and Projections (part 1)
In this lesson we will look at using texture projections and supports in
XSI.
Texture Supports and Projections (part 2)
Now that we have had a chance to look at texture supports in XSI, let’s
look at how we can use multiple texture supports on a single object.
Mix
Nodes
The mix nodes are a very useful set of tools that lets you take several
images and shaders and mix them together to create some very unique
effects.
Texture Placement
The placement of the textures is very important to the final look of the
rendered object. We will explore some of the methods for adjusting the
placement of textures on your objects.
Bump
and Displacement Maps
In this lesson we will look at the process of connecting and using bump
maps and how each can be optimized to achieve the best possible result.
Weight
Maps
We will look at weight maps in XSI and how they can be used to control
different operators and as color mixing controls in the Render Tree.
Sharing Materials
In this lesson we will look at the benefit of sharing an individual
material between several different objects. We will also discuss the
different methods of assigning and sharing materials.
Stained-Glass Window (part 1)
Now that we have had a chance to explore most of the concepts behind the
Render Tree, let’s put those concepts to use by adding textures and
effects to an entire scene.
Stained-Glass Window (part 2)
Now that we have textured the main wall, let’s add the color and bump
maps to the bricks around the window.
Stained-Glass Window (part 3)
We will now begin texturing the stained-glass window. We will use the FX
Tree to give our photograph the look of stained glass and use some color
correction operators to alter the color of the glass.
Stained-Glass Window (part 4)
Now that we have most of the texturing work done, we will use the Render
Tree to add specialized nodes to individual lights and to the scene’s
render passes.
Stained-Glass Window (part 5)
To add a more dramatic effect to the render, we will use the Render Tree
to create light rays that pass through the colored parts of the
stained-glass window.
Stained-Glass Window (part 6)
In this final lesson we will use the Ambient Occlusion node to add more
depth and definition to the shadows of our final render without having
to create any new lights.
