Introduction to 3D: MEL Basics provides the foundation to Maya's innovative
technology MEL. Capable of radically changing the way you work, MEL provides a
quicker and more efficient workflow. In this training kit, you will learn
cutting-edge techniques and diverse fundamental concepts that will greatly
enhance productivity as well as automate and create effects that are difficult
and time-consuming to complete. With the use of "Introduction to 3D: MEL Basics"
you will easily learn the basics of MEL commands, controlling and adjusting
attributes, flow of execution and loops, variable and data types, manipulating
and naming nodes, designing MEL user interfaces, creating shader networks with
MEL, and an array of methods presented in a clear easy-to-follow format with
countless interactive projects. Develop the necessary foundation to create
complex and elaborate visual effects of professional magnitude that you can
easily build and enhance.
Overview of MEL
Learn where the
different parts of the UI are located, and how to enter commands using
the script editor, command line, and shell.
Understanding Syntax
Every language has rules, and programming syntax is a set of
those rules that govern how the script is written. The basic rules of
MEL are easy to learn, and this lesson will give you a good start.
Using the Shelf and Marking Menus
This lesson will teach you how to make your scripts easy to
access using the shelf and custom marking menus containing your code.
Working with a Nodes' Attributes
This lesson will cover how to use the setAttr, connectAttr,
addAttr and aliasAttr commands with nodes. These commands will allow you
to modify your attributes from the command line.
Working with Variables
Using and controlling variables are one of the most important
skills to master. This lesson will teach you how to use integers, float,
string and array variables.
Working with
WHILE Loops
In this lesson we will explore how to use while loops to
generate a series of objects in a scene.
Working with FOR Loops
FOR loops are a bit more complex in structure, but they are
worth using due to their compact code. This lesson will teach you how to
update a loop using FOR.
Creating Global Procedures
The use of procedures to simplify your code will give you an
opportunity to see the real possibilities of MEL. This lesson will teach
you how to pass variable information to the procedure.
Creating a User Interface (UI)
Since we already have a procedure written, we can now create
a custom user interface for that script. This way the UI script will
talk to the global procedure.
Creating a Script to Remove Attributes
Often times, when working on character rigs, you will need to
remove the 'translate' and 'scale' attributes from each joint. This
script will simplify that process for you.
Building a UI for the Attribute Remover Script
This lesson will teach you how to build a custom user
interface to control the Attribute Remover script, making it really easy
to remove attributes from a node.
Building a Shape of the First Flower Petal
This lesson will show you how to select CV's using MEL, and
create the first flower petal.
Creating Loops for Rows of CV's
We will need to move 18 CV's, and the easiest way to do that
is to create a loop that will take care of it for us.
Creating the Flower Core
This part of the MEL script will create and name the core of
the flower.
Creating the Rest of the Petals
This lesson will demonstrate how to duplicate the rest of the
petals and make the flower shape.
Using Switch, Case and If Statements
We will use Switch and Case statements to check on a shader
existence for the flower. We will also examine how to use If statements.
Creating Shader Networks with MEL
This lesson explores a lot of different commands needed to
create shader networks in MEL, including shadingNode, sets and
connectAttr.
Connecting Shader to Petals
This lesson will teach you how to connect the shading network
we just created to each of the petals in the flower.
Building and Connecting the Core Shaders
This lesson will teach you how to create a simple shader and
add it to the core of the flower.
Adding Randomness to the Flowers
This final lesson will teach you how to generate random
numbers to give each flowers' petals a distinctive look.
